In Zutah-ziz we have the name of the god Suteh, which Mr Tomkins has also detected in 'Sateh-beg, the name of a North Syrian city in the geographical list of Thothmes III (no 155). 5. The custom of swearing an oath on the top of a staff was frequent in Egypt; see SPIEGELBaERG in the Rectieil dle travaux rela/ifs a' la philologic et a' l'archeologie edgyptienncs et assyrienn.?s XXV, pp. 184-190. There is probably a reference to the same custom in Gen. XLVII, 31. See also above, GOL. Xl, 19-20. - irkum is from r-aga~inu. 7. c/tira is the Ass. etiru. 1 1. Literally " the manehs of the tablet ". Apparently a sort of banknote is meant. 13. pih is from pihdi "Ito close 14. The nominative to the verb must be AMur-itima. 21. The character may he intended for it instead of is; i/ti-ga "1 along with thee ". 25. AAK in the sense of "Icapital" was pronounced gagadanarn, according to GOL. IX, 5. 29. gahusu-ni is for ~,a-ihazza-ni, or, possibly, gsa-ahizz-gu-ni " where I hold it " In 1897 Mi. Gole'nischeff purchased three (still unpublished) Cappadocian tablets which he was kind enough to allow me to copy. They are as follows:
