SUMERIAN LOAN-WORDS10 405 aduru court. Sumerian a-dur (BR. 11680), cf. 11W 29, written in classical texts always a-a=, Gud. Cyl. A X 1,1I1. A noun formiation fromn dur== a~hu, cf. BR. 10526. aga turban, crown, BR. 6949 and cf. Babyl. I 289. A word age used for the head-dress of a god, Gud. Cyl. A IV 16. Cf. further SAK 106, XV 25" and REC pt. 2 no. 448 his. In 11am. Code XLIII 45 used of the head-dress of a king and III 26 of a god. The word seems to have mneant originally " horned turban of a god " and while ne ver worn by kings yet a small emblem resembling the agia was worn by Assyrian kings on their necklaces, see Ass yrian Sculptures of Br. Muiseumr, Part VI pl. LXXX-LXCXXI. The horned turban seems origoinally to have had no connection with the horns of the moon, but later a-kua (Br. 11 680) used for the moon. The word dumugul for Sin (Br. 41159) and for Adad (SAl 2742) is a contraction of duma-aga ==child of the crown. agubbu holy water and also vessel for holy water; a-gub BR. 11418; taken from the sacred sea Suarpu 9, 741; agubba mullil bit ill, the holy water which cleanses the temple CT XVII 39, 68-74. For pictorial representations, see Zl1IMMERN, Bit. 94 note 5; also ZUIMMERN in N('deke Denkschrift, 9647. egubbu and iqribbu, cf. 11W I4a, BR. 11419. ahhu, uhhu'l poison, 11W 43. Sumerian loan-word for -ru'tu BR. 8297; see KB VI] 411I where uhhui is given preference to ahhu on account of the spelling u-htz= ru'tu Sb 85, but &hhu also possible from a-a,,qh in Gud. Cyl. B IV 16. alalId water pail, 94i4-SUD alala alalta ZA IX 221,~ 25; in line 23 the same word is rendered in Sum. by gidi or grisa ie. the straight cane. Same word as alallu and ela llu HW 73 b and alalla CT XVIII 20, 10452,7 9. ZA IX 221,26 gis"-UD ==alala alal&. 'Written tat-c -alailh CT XVII 26, 64; notes 25-2 6 give A-lal, a-lal1 noun formations from tat. 1. According to the plan of editing Babyl. h = (kh in Semitic). It must however be remembered that while the Semitic loan-wvord was pronounced ahhju, the Sumerian original was,irqhn.
