The rout of the Whigs under their gallant and distinguished leader, Major-general Winfield Scott, was complete: four States only were carried by his friends. F Franklin Pierce, the fourteenth President of the United States, was a native of the State of New Hampshire; he came i of one of its most respected families; an ancestor fought in the j War of the Revolution; the descendants were Democrats of I the Jackson school. A lawyer by profession, he had represented his native town in the Legislature and his State in the j Senate; he had also seen service in the army under General Scott during the operations against the city of Mexico.
