496 CALENDAR OF LIBERATE ROLLS. 1260. Membrane 9-cont. To the sheriff of Wilts. Contrabreve to roof and repair where absolutely necessary the king's buildings of Clarendon and Salisbury castle which were unroofed and damaged by the wind, the cost to be credited by view and testimony of lawful men. Feb. 18. Liberate to Simon de Monte Forti, earl of Leicester, 100 marks Westminster. of the fee of Esquivat (Eschivati) de Chabeneys, count of Bigorre, in full payment of 700 marks due to the earl by a grant dated 7 March in the 39th year (Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1247-1258, p. 403), the king remaining quit by an account made between him and the earl before the treasurer and barons on St. Lucy's day in the 42nd year, and by the sum of arrears due to the earl thereon, of the count's fee for three years preceding the account. Feb. 24. Allocate to the bailiffs of Winchester, in the farm of the town, Westminster. 14s. spent in carriage of 2 tuns of wine from Winchester to Westminster in the 42nd year. Allocate to the executors of Henry de Farleye, formerly keeper of the manors of Kokham and Braye, in the issues thereof, 100s. delivered to Geoffrey de Sutton in the 43rd year for Easter and Michaelmas terms in that year of the 100s. yearly granted to him therefrom by charter for life on account of his long and praiseworthy service to the king and queen. By command of the queen. To the sheriff of Devon. Contrabreve to spend up to 100s. in repairs of the king's buildings at Exeter castle by view and testimony of lawful men. Feb. 25. Liberate to Bartholomew le Bigod, who has returned to England Westminster. with the king's licence to despatch certain business of his, 5 marks to buy himself a palfrey of the king's gift. To the sheriff of Northampton. Contrabreve to distrain without delay all persons bound to repair the enclosure of the king's park of Norhampton, to repair the defects thereof where they are so bound and accustomed; and to repair where necessary the defects which the king ought to repair; the cost to be credited by view and testimony of lawful men. To the sheriff of Suffolk. Contrabreve to carry Richard de Lay, kept prisoner in the king's prison of Gippewich, safely to Huntingdon for delivery to the sheriff of that county, to whom the king has written to receive him, and keep him safely till further orders. Mandate to the sheriff of Huntingdon accordingly.
