376 CALENDAR OF LIBERATE ROLLS. 1257. Membrane 6-cont. their hands in London for the king and queen against the coming Whitsuntide. Liberate to Ernald, chaplain of Sault, 5 marks to maintain himself in the king's service there. Liberate without delay and without fail to brother Hugh Rosteyn, Templar, 10 marks of the king's gift for his expenses homewards. May 26. To the sheriff of Berks. Contrabreve to receive all the timber Westminster. bought in the park of Roger de Mortuo Mari of Stratfeld by Master Alexander the king's carpenter for the king's works at Westminster, which he will deliver at Stratfeld, and to carry it by land and water to Westminster for delivery to the said Alexander, so that the works may not be delayed for lack thereof, on which account the king would have to betake himself seriously to the sheriff; the cost to be credited by view. To the sheriffs of London. Contrabreve to let Roger le Fevre, making the king's quarrels at the Tower of London, have 41d. daily for his wages from the Monday after the Invention of the Holy Cross in this year till Michaelmas, and also iron, coal, a millstone, and other necessaries for making the same by view of the constable of the Tower. MEMBRANE 5. May 28. Liberate to William de Cobham 20 marks for this Easter Westminster. term of the 40 marks granted to him yearly for his maintenance so long as he is in eyre in the office of justice, making reservation etc. May 28. To the sheriff of Somerset. Contrabreve to let Master Simon Westminster. de Welles have 2 marks out of the issues of the county for his expenses in coming to the king at Westminster (monasterium) at his command, and for his future expenses in coming to Westminster to dwell there and make a tomb (tumulum) over (ultra) the body of Katherine the king's daughter, which has been delivered for burial in the church of Westminster; and to carry to Westminster his tools (utensilia) necessary for the work, as he will tell. May 28. Liberate to Master Simon de Welles 50 marks to complete an Westminster. image of gilt bronze as enjoined to place on the said tomb, and for his expenses in all things, to be paid by successive instalments as he shall be seen to labour on the despatch thereof.
