342 CALENDAR OF LIBERATE ROLLS. Membrane 12-cont. 1256. Liberate without delay and without fail to Bertram de Bovyle Nov. 23. * [and Bernard his brother], king's yeoman, 10 marks in part Winchester. payment of arrears of their wages while with the king in Gascony. To the bailiffs of Suthampton. Contrabreve to let the sheriff of Hants have 6 fothers (carratas) of lead out of the farm of the town for the works at the castles of Winchester and Porrecestr'. To the same. Contrabreve to let Roger Alys have a tun of wine of the king's gift out of the said farm. To the sheriff of Surrey and Sussex. Contrabreve to make a stone gateway at Guldeford, and over it a solar 32 feet within the walls by 18 feet, and a sufficient wardrobe therefor (eidem solio, rectius solario); in the chancellor's chamber there, to remove the fireplace and place it further northwards, to remove the (halder') of the chamber and put it elsewhere, and to whitewash and wainscot the chamber above (ultra) the chancellor's bed; in the gable of the king's hall to make four glass windows, in the chapel of St. Katherine to mend a window, to heighten and mend the fireplace in the queen's chamber, to whitewash and mend the tower of the castle where absolutely necessary, and to whitewash and mend the bailey walls; all to be done by the view and counsel of Master John de Glouc' the king's mason and Master Alexander the king's carpenter, the cost to be credited by view. To the sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk. Contrabreve, on his loyalty and as he loves himself and all his possessions, to go in person in all haste to Yarmouth and Norwich, and buy 30 last of good herrings by the counsel and testimony of the bailiffs and good men of those towns, paying for it out of the farm of the counties or otherwise, and to carry it by water to Westminster for delivery to the keepers of the larder, not failing hereof as he cares for his own safety. To the sheriff of Bedford and Buckingham. Contrabreve to pay 100s. out of the issues of his counties to John son of Bernard for a goshawk bought for the king. To the bailiffs of Suthampton. Contrabreve to let Roger Alys have a tun of wine (as in the fourth entry above). To the sheriff of Warwick and Leicester. Contrabreve to let Bernard de Luginak, Arnold de Curs and Gaylard de Ursmort have 75s. each out of the issues of his counties for arrears of their wages while with the king on his service in Gascony down to the * Interlined.
