40 HENRY ll. 317 1256. Membrane 4-cont. county, for Master W. archdeacon of Surrey and Drew de Barentyn, whom the king is appointing for his errand beyond seas. Liberate to William de Glouc', goldsmith of London etc. (cancelled quia superius xxvj die Maii, i.e. p. 317). Liberate to Nicholas de Haudlo (Hadlou in margin) 30 marks for Michaelmas term in the 40th year of the yearly fee of 60 marks, to which the king has increased the fee of 40 marks which he used to receive to maintain himself in the king's service in the office of justice, as the king has learnt for certain by trustworthy men that he cannot honorably maintain himself on 40 marks, [because he is about to go to distant parts on the king's service].* Allocate to Philip de Lega, escheator in co. Stafford, in the issues of his escheatry, 50 marks delivered in the wardrobe at Wudestok to Artald de Sancto Romano, keeper, on the day of the Assumption in the 40th year, being the fine made by Richard le Brun with John Wallerand to the king's use for the wardship of the lands late of Robert de Mere in Hamchurch and Robert de Holdich in Cumton till the majority of their heirs, with the marriage of Robert son and heir of the latter. Aug. 20. Allocate to James Fresel, formerly keeper of the bishopric of Woodstock. Salisbury, in the issues thereof, 2- marks delivered to Hugh le Fraunceys and his fellows for their expenses in taking game for the king in the forest of Gillingham against the feast of the Assumption last past. Allocate to William de Lessebergh, sheriff of Gloucester, in the farm of the county, 36s. 4d. spent in purchase of 168 geese against the same feast and in carrying them to Wudestok, as reckoned and attested by William de Grey the king's steward. Allocate to William Heyrun, sheriff of Northumberland, in the farm of his county, 181. 2s. ll-d. expenses of the king of Scotland and his queen at Newcastle-on-Tyne on the day of St. Peter's Chains last past. To the sheriff of Northampton. Contrabreve to receive 100 bucks which William Luvel and Henry de Candovr' the king's huntsmen will take in the bailiwick of Hugh de Goldingham, and 30 which they will take in the forest of Roteland, and deliver to the sheriff, and salt the venison and carry it to Westminster against the coming feast of St. Edward for delivery to the keeper of the larder. * Following the attestation, in another hand.
