May 8. Liberate to Simon de Geynvyle, after payment to Count Windsor. Thomas de Sabaudia as specially enjoined, 50 marks for Easter term in the 40th year of his yearly fee of 50 marks. To the sheriff of Essex. Contrabreve to fell 50 oaks in the king's wood of Kingeswode in the forest of Essex by the counsel and aid of Master John, carpenter of Dover castle, whom the king is sending for that purpose; to trim them, and to carry the timber and such lop as is needed to Dover for delivery to Reynold de Cobham, constable of the castle, for the works there; and to make profit for the king of the chips and the lop less needed by view and counsel of Richard de Muntfichet, steward of the forest, who is commanded to permit the sheriff to do this and to give his said counsel and aid as he shall see fit. To the sheriff of Kent. Contrabreve to pay 1001. without delay to Reynold de Cobham, keeper of Dover castle, in part payment of 500 marks which he receives yearly for keeping the castle, including the wards belonging to the castle and the customs of passage in the port of Dover which belong to the king. To the sheriff of Wilts. Contrabreve to receive 20 bucks to be taken by William Luvel and Henry de Candovr' the king's huntsmen in the bailiwick of Devizes, and 10 to be taken by them in the forest of Selewode in his county, and delivered to him, and to salt the venison and carry it to Westminster against the coming Whitsuntide for delivery to the keeper of the larder there. To the sheriff of Somerset. Contrabreve to receive 10 stags to be taken by Richard and William de Candovr' the king's huntsmen in his park of Petherton and delivered to the sheriff and to deal with the venison as above. To the sheriffs of London. Contrabreve to repair the defects of the Tower where absolutely necessary by task-work as Master John de Glouc' the king's mason shall have ordered the repairs (eos commiserit reparandos), the cost to be credited by view.
