262 CALENDAR OF LIBERATE ROLLS. 1255. Membrane 16-cont. To the bailiffs of York. Contrabreve etc. Cancelled quia superius (4th entry). Dec. 29. To the sheriff of Hants. Contrabreve to pay 40s. without delay to Master Thomas the king's surgeon for his robes burnt and consumed by the king. To the bailiffs of Suthampton. Contrabreve to find a set of vestments (vestimentum), books, and other ornaments needful to serve the chapel in the castle of Suthampton for the king's chaplain ministering there. Dec. 29. To the sheriff of Hants. Contrabreve to wainscot the king's Winchester. pantry and cellar in his castle of Winchester, to remove the earth from the ditch under the king's tower behind the hall, to examine (rimari) and mend the walls of the castle where necessary, to make the postern gate of new timber and likewise a building outside the king's oven, to amend the painting in the king's and queen's chamber, to renew the painting near the king's desk (lectum) in the chapel, to remove the earth from the road (chemino) between the gate of the castle and the barbican, and to mend the common privy chamber, which threatens to fall down; the cost to be credited by view. Cancelled quia aliter inferius xxix die Junii. 1256. Jan. 2. To the sheriff of Surrey and Sussex. Contrabreve to pay 20 Guildford. marks without delay to Richard Testard and 20 marks to Geoffrey de Braybuf in partial recompense for their losses from the king's mills at Guldeford, which were set up lower [down stream] than theirs. To the sheriff of Northampton. Contrabreve to finish the queen's wardrobe begun close to her chamber at Geydenton, the cost to be credited by view. Jan. 3. To the sheriff of Surrey. Contrabreve to pay 2d. daily to Ellis Guildford. Maunsell for keeping the king's park of Guldeford from Easter in the 39th year till the Epiphany in the 40th year and thenceforward so long as he (the sheriff) remains sheriff, as other sheriffs have received that sum therefor in past times. To the sheriff of Sussex. Contrabreve to pay 1001. without delay out of the issues of the last eyre in the county to Richard the constable and Ellis Maunsell, keepers of the king's works at Guldeford, to pay certain arrears of debts incurred on the works, to wainscot the king's and queen's chapels, the king's chamber, and other chambers new built there, to make two great windows in the king's chapel, to bar the windows of the king's new chamber
