236 CALENDAR OF LIBERATE ROLLS. 1255. Membrane 3-cont. Aug. 7. To James Fresel, bailiff of St. Briavels. Contrabreve to pay Scrooby. 200 marks without delay out of the issues of the sale of a clearing (trenchie) made in the forest of Dene, or out of other issues of his bailiwick, to Robert Walerand, who spent that sum on the despatch of the king's business in the court of Rome, and is bound therefor to the men of Cahors, and to whom the king ordered it to be paid at the Exchequer (p. 227), but he did not get it. Aug. 11. To William Herun, justice of the forest this side Trent, and to Cawood. the sheriff of Northumberland. Contrabreve to pay 15 marks of the king's gift without delay to Robert Walerand out of the issues of the office of justice or those of the county. Aug. 14. To the sheriff of Warwick. Contrabreve to pay 161. 6s. to York. Nicholas de Sancto Mauro, going to Gascony by order of the king, being arrears of his wages while with the king on his service in Gascony from the Sunday after St. Dunstan in the 38th year till Monday, the morrow of All Saints following, as reckoned by Richard le Rus (Ruffum), king's clerk. To the mayor and bailiffs of York. Contrabreve to pay 5 marks to Richard de Grey, going on the king's errand beyond seas, to buy himself a palfrey of the king's gift. To the sheriff of Northumberland. Contrabreve to make purveyance of 6 tuns of wine at Durham without delay against the king's arrival there. Aug. 16. To the sheriff of Kent. Contrabreve to find safe and speedy York. transport at Dover for Richard de Grey, whom the king is sending on his errand beyond seas, with his men, horses, and harness. The like for Nicholas de Sancto Mauro. To the sheriff of Northampton. Contrabreve to carry to Westminster without delay 50 fothers of lead to be delivered by the sheriff of Nottingham and Derby, for delivery to Edward de Westm', keeper of the king's works at Westminster. Allocate to the citizens of York, in the farm of their town for the coming Michaelmas term, 131. 6s. 8d. delivered in the wardrobe to Artald de Sancto Romano, keeper, on the morrow of the Assumption in the 39th year, and 311. 13s. for wax, almonds, and facings (penulis) of minever taken from them for the king at York by the hands of the said Artald in that year. Allocate to Master John Clarel and Adam de Hilton, keepers of the archbishopric of York, in the issues thereof, 200 marks paid
