132 CALENDAR OF LIBERATE ROLLS. 1253. Membrane 4-cont. on loan to his use from Bernard Prosperin and other merchants of Siena and Maynettus Spine and other merchants of Florence, the sum of 100 marks to be deducted from the payment of 10001. to be made to the said merchants at the Michaelmas Exchequer, for which a writ of liberate has been made. Liberate to Bertram de Andr' 30 marks of the king's gift for his expenses homewards. To the sheriffs of London. Contrabreve to buy 165 pairs of shoes in the city of London, part to be worth 4ld. the pair, part to be worth 5d., and part to be worth 6jd., and deliver them to brother Giles the king's almoner to distribute among the poor, so that he may have them in the wardrobe by the Wednesday before Whit Sunday. To the sheriff of Hants. Contrabreve to pay 20s. to Master Gerard the king's engineer for Easter term in the 37th year of the 40s. granted to him yearly for keeping the king's buildings in Winchester castle. May 31. Liberate to John de Amblyon 121. 10s., being the king's old Sutton. debts to him, and 30 marks for his expenses when going on the king's errand to the court of Rome. To the sheriff of Northumberland. Contrabreve to mend and repair where necessary the great tower in the king's castle of Baumburc, the three gates in the castle, with their doors, locks, and fastenings, and the great swing-bridge outside the great gate to the south, the cost to be credited by view. Note that on Ascension Day in the 37th year the king received the homage of Nicholas Sarrasin (Saraceni), son of Peter Sarrasin, for the yearly fee of 101. granted to him and his heirs. June 1. Liberate to Eustace de Baylloll 101. for Easter term in the 37th Rochester. year of his yearly fee of 201. June 1. To the sheriff of Hants. Contrabreve to make bridges and Faversham. hurdles without delay, as he loves himself and all that he has, in addition to those long since ordered to be made out of the farm of Suhampton and Portesm' and the issues of the county, out of the same issues or other sources, so that the king shall have enough, including those already made, for 300 ships at Portesm' in 8 days from Trinity at latest; and to make firm prohibition throughout the county that no carpentry be done till the bridges and hurdles are finished. The king is writing to A. elect of Winchester and the priors of St. Swithun's at Winchester and Suwyk to aid him
