EDISON As I KNOW HIM the best, in the country and able to send or receive with anyone. The operator's job, which eventually took him all over the country, was only a means to an end, but it directed him into electricity and diverted him from first making his name and fame as a chemist. Rescuing that child from the tracks was the start of that section of Edison's career which gave us the incandescent light and that whole new system of electrical power which has brought in' modern industry. 28
