A St. James's, 20th. May 1766. Sir I am favourd with your Letters the 28th: March, giving an Account of several Military Transactions in with America, As to the Civil, I find they then remained in your Province particu larly) much in the same State, as when you wrote before. The News, you will since have heard, of the repeal of the Stamp Act, will probably have made a considerable Alteration in the Tempers of People: And I hope, they will have the good Sense not to abuse or be unmendful of the great Lenity and Indulgence, shown them by the Legislature & Government here on this important Occasion; but will make Return of Duty & Cordiality equal to the Excess of that Heat & Intemperance, which have of late too generally shewn themselves in the Colonies. The new Disposition, you propose for His Majesty's Troops, will in many respects be very advantagious, particularly in that very necessary one of saving - Major Genl. Gage.
