A 626 Office of Ordnance 29th. March 1765. My Lord Having lately received Returns of the several Persons paid upon the Staff in North America we have taken the same into consideration together with Sir Jeffery Amherst, Letter to your Lordship of the 18th may last signifying that on a due Consideration of the extensiveness of the Country and the many Forts that must necessarily be kept up at least until the Country is more settled he did not would be think it adviseable to Reduce the Staff of the Royal Artillery then but that in some time it might perhaps be lessened without detriment to the Service. We beg leave to represent to your Lordship that we are of Opinion the Forts that must necessarily be kept in America can be no Reason, for Continuing the Artillery Staff as Establish: ments for those Forts may be formed at less Expence; and as the Troops are not in motion at present and the Indians in general have agreed to terms of Peace, de humbly submit to your Lordship, whether at this time, and - under these circumstances the Expence of the
