North American species of Hygrophorus / L.R. Hesler [and] Alexander H. Smith.

252 SECTION HYGROPHORUS lar (in dried material), smooth, tinged yellowish in Melzer's reagent. Basidia 37-56 x 6-8(9) t, 4-spored. Pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia none. Gill trama (in dried material) only slightly or not at all divergent, often slightly interwoven, hyphae 3-10 v broad. Cuticle of repent, narrow, gelatinous hyphae, 1.5-4 / broad, the gelatinous zone 100-140 M thick. No hypodermium differentiated. Pileus trama interwoven, hyphae radially disposed. Clamp connections not found. HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION-In leaf mold, under magnolia, Florida, January. MATERIAL STUDIED-FLORIDA: Murrill 16030 (type, from Alachua Co., Jan. 9, 1938). OBSERVATIONs-The description of macroscopic characters above is taken from Murrill's (1938) original account. We have studied the type; the description of microscopic characters given above is based on these type studies. In his Latin description, Murrill (1938) states that the stipe is viscid, although he omits this point in the English version. Sections of dried material do not revive well, and the gill trama does not show the typical divergent condition. A study of revived material of other species of section Hygrophorus which were known to have divergent gill trama was made as a comparison, and it was found that in the less robust species the trama does not always revive in such a manner as to show the original arrangement of the hyphae. For this reason further studies of fresh material are desirable on Murrill's species. 151 Hygrophorus eburneus (Fr.) Fr. Epicr. Myc., p. 321. 1838 Agaricus eburneus Fr., Syst. Myc., p. 33. 1821.
