The boletes of Michigan, by Alexander H. Smith and Harry D. Thiers.

66 THE BOLETES OF MICHIGAN "vinaceous-buff' to "vinaceous-fawn" smears and dots, ground color yellow in age, the glandular areas discoloring to gray or blackish on drying; no veil present at any stage. Spore deposit dull cinnamon; spores 7-9 X 2.5-3.2 /, nearly oblong in face view, somewhat inequilateral in profile; smooth, a hyaline sheath evident, nearly hyaline in KOH, pale yellow in Melzer's. Basidia 24-28 X 6-7 p, hyaline in KOH, yellowish in Melzer's, clavate, 4-spored. Pleurocystidia 49-60 X 6-9 g, subcylindric to narrowly clavate, scattered, typically in fascicles, often with bister content and dark brown amorphous pigment masses incrusting the bundle at the level of the hymenium. Cheilocystidia in larger aggregations, more capitate and darker colored when revived in KOH but otherwise similar to the pleurocystidia. Caulocystidia numerous to abundant, often in fascicles, similar to the pleurocystidia or with more apical enlargement individually, abundant over large areas, content hyaline to bister when revived in KOH, mostly incrusted with amorphous material. Tube trama of gelatinous divergent hyphae from a central floccose strand. Epicutis of pileus a layer of narrow hyphae (3-6 g) with gelatinous walls and with bister content in KOH and in Melzer's. Hyphae of context floccose and hyaline. Clamp connections absent. Habit, habitat, and distribution.-Scattered to abundant under white pine, late summer and early fall, not rare within the natural range of white pine but not found by us as yet in plantations. Observations.-The white pileus, conspicuously smeared stipe, and lack of a veil in conjunction with proximity to white pine make this an easily recognized species.
