The boletes of Michigan, by Alexander H. Smith and Harry D. Thiers.

BOLETINELLUS Murrill Mycologia 1:7. 1909 This genus features ellipsoid to subglobose spores, an hymenophore coarsely boletinoid (varying from merulioid to nearly lamellate), lack of a veil, and the stipe lateral, eccentric or central. Type species: Boletinellus merulioides. Observations.-In our estimation this species is not at all closely related to Gyrodon lividus of Europe. To us the latter seems more closely aligned with Suillus. Our opinion is based upon excellent illustrations of the European species, detailed descriptions, and dried specimens. The genus likewise does not appear close to Phylloporus of the Paxillaceae. In the latter genus the gills closely resemble those of Gomphidius in thickness, attachment, and spacing. 212. Boletinellus merulioides (Schweinitz) Murrill Mycologia 1:7. 1909 Boletinus merulioides (Schweinitz) Coker & Beers, Bol. of N. Carol. p. 87. 1943. Pileus 5-12 cm broad, plane to plano-convex with an incurved margin, expanding to plane or shallowly depressed on the disc and with a wavy spreading uplifted margin, margin sterile, entire, incurved to involute when young; surface soft, glabrous to pruinose or with a fine tomentum, dry texture occasionally appearing appressed-fibrillose scaly on the disc, colored various shades of dull yellow-brown when bruised. Context up to 1 cm thick, often thinner, soft but toughish, pale oliveyellow or pinkish next to the cuticle, unchanging or rarely slowly changing slightly to bluish green when cut; taste of raw Irish potatoes, odor not distinctive. Tubes 3-5 mm deep, strongly decurrent, radiating, light yellow or often with a greenish tint, finally dull ochraceous, when young changing to dark olive and later reddish brown when injured; pores compound, 394
