Hebeloma fragrans sp. nov. var. fragrans Pileus 1.5-3 cm latus, obtusus demum convexus vel planus, glaber, vel ad marginem leviter fibrillosus, subviscidus, ad centrum fuscobrunneus, tarde pallidior. Context fragilis, fragrans, sapor mitis. Lamellae subdistantes, latae demum ventricosae, cinnamomeoargillaceae. Stipes 2-3.5 cm longus, 3-4.5 mm crassus, fragilis, cinereobrunneus, brunnescens; velum cinereo-argillaceum. Sporae 10-15 x 6-7 pLm, non dextrinoideae; inequilaterales, Cheilocystidia 42-73 x 4-6 rLm, ~ cylindrica vel filamentosa, vel 38-67 x 6-12 x 4-6 rim, fusoide ventricosa, hyalina. Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatum est, Smith 90594; legit prope Elk Camp, Burnt Mt., Pitkin County, Colorado, 28 Aug 1980, Evenson, Mitchel, and Smith. Pileus 1.5-3 cm broad, obtuse to convex, becoming plane, surface soon glabrous or margin retaining faint patches of grayish buff veil remnants, subviscid, disc fuscous-brown, margin dull tawny to paler, opaque at all times, when faded pale reddish tan except for fuscousbrown disc. Context thin and fragile, odor fragrant, taste slight; FeSO4 blackish in base of stipe. Lamellae subdistant, depressed-adnate, broad and in age ventricose, + "Sayal Brown" at maturity. Stipe 2-3.5 cm long, 3-4.5 mm thick, equal, fragile, pale grayish brown overall and fibrillose from grayish buff veil, darkening from the base upward, no veil zones evident. Spores 10-15 x 6-7 Jm, appearing smooth in KOH and punctate in Melzer's; not dextrinoid when fresh or as dried, inequilateral in profile view, ovate in face view. Hymenium.-Basidia 4-spored, 8-10.5 (Jm broad near apex. Pleurocystidia none. Cheilocystidia 42-73 x 4-6 (Jm and cylindric to filamentous, and some 38-67 x 6-12 x 4-6 tJm, fusoid-ventricose and apex not enlarged, hyaline in KOH, scattered along the edge as well as in groups. Lamellar and pilear tissues.-Lamellar trama typical of the genus. Cuticle of pileus a thin ixocutis of hyphae 1.5-3 (4) Ilm diam, branched sparingly, clamps present. Hypoderm hyphoid to cellular, walls not highly colored in KOH or in Melzer's. Pileal trama typical of the genus (no red tints developing in Melzer's medium).
