Cheilocystidia (35) 42-67 x 4-10 x 3-5 Fim, fusoid-ventricosa, obtusa. Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatum est, Smith 87091; legit prope Independence Pass, Pitkin County, Colorado, 5 Aug 1976. Pileus 2-4 cm broad, plano-umbonate, viscid, glabrous, tawny over the disc, margin paler and grayish, often with thin clay color patches of veil fibrils along the margin (as dried). Context white, odor and taste pungent, FeSO4 on base of stipe merely brownish. Lamellae close, adnate, narrow, pinkish brown when young, ~ "Verona Brown" in age (a dull reddish brown), not beaded. Stipe 3-4 cm long, 3-4 mm thick, equal, solid, pallid within, brownish at surface, with an annular fibrillose zone from the broken veil, pallid and scurfy near the apex. Spores 8.5-10 (11) x 5.5-6 (6.8) JIm, ellipsoid to ovoid, in profile some of them oblong, + smooth under a high-dry objective, not dextrinoid, wall thin. Hymenium.-Basidia 4-spored. Pleurocystidia none. Cheilocystidia (35) 42-67 x 4-10 x 3-5 Vxm, fusoid-ventricose, apex obtuse to slightly enlarged, often with a wavy neck. Lamellar and pilear tissues.-Cuticle of pileus an ixolattice fairly well developed, the hyphae 2-7 pLm diam, branched, clamped at the septa. Hypodermium cellular, reddish brown in KOH. Pileal trama of radial hyphae 3-15 pJm diam, some hyphae with inflated cells, ochraceous in KOH. Habit, habitat, and distribution.-Scattered under conifers, Independence Pass area, Pitkin County, Colorado, August 5, 1976 (type, MICH). Observations.-The narrow gills, color of the veil, and brownish instead of olive-black FeSO4 reaction on the base of the stipe distinguish this variant from our concept of H. mesophaeum var. mesophaeum.
