Pileus 1-3.5 cm latus, obtusus demum convexus vel planus, griseocanescens, glabrescens, ad centrum atrobrunneus; odor et gustus mitis. Lamellae confertae, latae, adnatae, griseae demum obscure cinnamomeae, brunneomaculatae. Stipes 2-3.5 cm longus, 1.5-3 mm crassus, rufobrunneus, griseo-fibrillosus, tarde striatus. Velum cinereum, evanescens. Sporae 8-10 (11) x 5-6 pLm, in "KOH" ochraceae, subleves, oblongae vel ellipsoideae, non dextrinoideae. Cheilocystidia versiformia: 18-27 x 8-15 (Im, utriformia vel clavata; 36-40 x 8-11 x 4-6 pLm, elongate fusoid-ventricosa, + 50 x 6-8 p.m, elongate clavata. Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatum est, Smith 88697; legit prope Independence Pass, Pitkin County, Colorado, 23 Jul 1978, Evenson and Smith. Pileus 1-3.5 cm broad, obtuse to convex, becoming plane, surface viscid but soon dry, grayish hoary at first from a thin coating of veil fibrils, blackish brown beneath the canescence, cinnamon-brown in age. Context concolorous with the moist surface, odor none, taste mild; FeSO4 staining stipe base olive-black. Lamellae broad, close, adnate, at first grayish, in age ~ "Verona Brown," edges stained darker in age but not beaded (and stains not resulting from dried droplets).
