24 The Veiled Species of Hebeloma hyphae typically 1.2-3 Jm diam and usually with clamp connections. Lamellar trama of ~ parallel hyphae narrower near the subhymenium than in the central core; subhymenium of narrow filamentous hyphae, rarely containing some small but inflated cells. Habit, habitat and distribution.-Solitary to gregarious to caespitose on soil in conifer or hardwood forests, on sand dunes, disturbed soil, or on stream banks or outwash areas along streams, spring, summer, and fall; in the Rocky Mountains typically abundant during July and August; in the Pacific Northwest late summer and fall. Most species, apparently, are mycorrhiza formers with forest trees and shrubs, and they occur at all elevations to above the timber line. The genus is present throughout the entire western United States.
