The veiled species of Hebeloma in the western United States / Alexander H. Smith, Vera Stucky Evenson, and Duane H. Mitchel.

160 The Veiled Species of Hebeloma Lamellae whitish becoming brown, adnexed, broad (+ 4 mm), close, edges serrulate, when young beaded with hyaline drops which as they dry leave the gills spotted from trapped spores in the droplet. Stipe 3.5-5 cm long, 6-8 mm thick, equal, whitish slowly becoming tan, dry white-pruinose at apex, finely appressed fibrillose, lower down glabrescent; hollow; cortex concolorous with surface. Veil present as slight cottony roll of tissue (see above). Spores 9-12 x 5-6 JLm, distinctly roughened (under high-dry objective), pale clay color revived in KOH, about tawny in Melzer's, shape in profile + elongate-inequilateral, in face view ovate to boatshaped or + broadly fusoid. Hymenium.-Basidia 4-spored, 7-9 Rm broad, projecting when sporulating. Pleurocystidia none. Cheilocystidia elongate-clavate, 43 -64 x 7-10 rm (at apex), hyaline, broadest when short and narrowest when elongated. Gill trama typical but flushed diffusely with red in Melzer's. Cuticle of pileus a thick ixolattice (possibly an ixotrichodermium originally), hyphae 1-2 Lm diam, + hyaline, clamped, refractive. Hypodermium bay-brown in KOH, bay-red in Melzer's, cellularhyphoid (intermediate), walls encrusted. Tramal hyphae typical of the genus. Clamps present. Habit, habitat, and distribution.-Near the airport, Juneau, Alaska, on sandy silty soil under alder, cottonwood, and spruce (mixed) nearby; September 8, 1972 (type, MICH). Observations.-The diagnostic features of this species are: (1) the fresh pileus is slimy; (2) the white band of narrow cottony soft tissue present on the pilear margin; (3) young gills beaded with droplets; (4) stipe slowly becoming brown; and (5) the hypodermium bayred in Melzer's. The habitat is one in which a large number of veiled species is to be expected.
