The veiled species of Hebeloma in the western United States / Alexander H. Smith, Vera Stucky Evenson, and Duane H. Mitchel.

The Subgenus Hebeloma 159 some, apex silky and not truly white, base staining brown and the change progressing upward. Spores 11-14 x 5.5-7 tim, pale dull ochraceous in KOH, pale tawny in Melzer's (not truly dextrinoid) but slightly if mount is allowed to stand + 30 minutes; surface faintly marbled, in face view subfusiform to ovate, in profile elongate-inequilateral, apex + obtuse. Hymenium.-Basidia 4-spored, 8-10 jm broad near apex. Pleurocystidia none. Cheilocystidia 34-65 x 7-12 x 4-6 Rjm, narrowly fusoid-ventricose, the neck becoming greatly elongated, apex merely obtuse, agglutinating somewhat. Lamellar and pilear tissues.-Lamellar trama typical for the genus except that it flushed red at first when mounted in Melzer's. Cuticle of pileus an ixolattice (possibly an ixocutis at first), the hyphae 2-3 ixm wide and clamped, some dextrinoid debris present in the layer. Hypodermium cellular to intermediate, yellow in KOH fresh, rusty brown as revived, slowly becoming paler, incrustations not prominent. Tramal hyphae flushed red in sections mounted in Melzer's but soon fading. Habit, habitat, and distribution.-On mulch in conifer forests, above Elk Wallow, Fryingpan River, Pitkin County, Colorado, July 26, 1978 (type, MICH). Observations.-The yellow spores in KOH mounts, their tendency to be fusiform when seen in face view and the gray veil are the important characters. It is readily distinguished from H. praelatifolium on spore characters. Both have a gray veil. 93. Hebeloma juneauense sp. nov. Pileus 3-5 cm latus, convexus demum planus, viscosus, ad marginem albofloccosus, incarnato ochraceus vel tarde griseoochraceus; tarde leviter amarus. Lamellae latae, albidae demum brunneae, margines saepe guttas liquidas gerentes. Stipes 3.5-5 cm longus, 6-8 mm crassus, subalbus, tarde argillaceus. Sporae 9-12 x 5-6 vim. Cheilocystidia clavata, 43-64 x 7-10 Jim. Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatum est, WellsKempton 5958; legit prope Juneau, Alaska, 8 Sep 1972. Pileus 3-5 cm broad, convex, the margin inrolled, expanding to plane; color variable: pinkish tan to grayish ochre, sometimes with brownish irregular watery spots over the surface, viscid when moist slimy, smooth, shiny when faded, appressed fibrillose under the slime, margin of buttons with a narrow white cottony roll of soft tissue (this often sulcate from gill impressions, the layer or roll soon evanescent).
