108 The Veiled Species of Hebeloma Lamellar and pilear tissues.-Lamellar trama typical for the genus. Cuticle of pileus a thick ixocutis (over 100 Rxm thick), the hyphae much-branched, hyaline, refractive, 1.5-2 [tm wide and clamped. Hypodermium intermediate as to type and not highly colored in Melzer's, no incrustations of significance noted. Tramal hyphae typical for the genus. Clamps present. Habit, habitat, and distribution.-On waste ground, conifers nearby, Trinidad, California, December 24, 1965, White and Smith (type, MICH). Observations.-The important characters appear to be the orange-brown pileus when young, mild odor and taste, thick stipe, the thin pallid veil, dextrinoid spores distinctly rough under a high-dry objective (43 x), and the thick pilear ixocutis. Section HEBELOMA Subsection MAGNISPORAE subsect. nov. Sporae 10 (Lm vel ultra longae, in lateralibus amygdalaceae. Typus: Hebeloma kuehneri Spores 10 RIm or more long, inequilateral in profile. KEY TO STIRPES 1. Stipe not staining or discoloring in the lower portion by late maturity................................................ Stirps Coniferarum (p. 108) 1. Stipe soon darkening at base or lower portion, then upward.................. 2 2. Spores dextrinoid (medium to dark reddish brown in Melzer's)................................................ Stirps Kuehneri (p. 115) 2. Spores not dextrinoid, but in a mount a few may be found which become pale to ~ reddish brown in 30 minutes; (dried specimens are most reliable for this test)........................... Stirps Oregonense (p. 138) Stirps CONIFERARUM Stipe not darkening appreciably from the base up. KEY TO SPECIES 1.
