74 THE BOLETES OF MICHIGAN Stipe 6-10 cm long, 1-3 cm thick, solid, usually narrowed at the base, white within at first, staining vinaceous to vinaceous-brown where injured, at times entirely vinaceous-brown; surface white at first becoming yellow where not stained vinaceous-brown, glandular dotted or with masses of glandular cutis about 1 cm wide present, glandulae pinkish to vinaceous-brown (much as in S. granulatus only much larger). Spore deposit pale "Sayal-brown" when moisture has escaped; spores 7.5-9 X 3-3.2 u, oblong in face view, obscurely inequilateral in profile, smooth, hyaline in KOH and Melzer's, or slightly yellowish, some dark red-brown in KOH (from areas near the pleurocystidia?). Basidia 4-spored. Pleurocystidia clustered, 45-68 X 6-9 ju, cylindric to narrowly clavate, much vinaceous-red to vinaceous-brown amorphous pigment around the clusters in the hymenium but many cystidia with hyaline content at least in the projecting part (many basidia in vicinity of clusters also with red content and some with dull lilac-brown inclusions). Caulocystidia similar to pleurocystidia or smaller, the whole caulohymenium often dull vinaceous-red. Pileus cutis a collapsed trichodermium of hyphae 4-10 pi in diameter and as revived in KOH with copious incrustation of fine granules, the layer gelatinous; laticiferous hyphae with dull brown content present, subcuticular layer with much vinaceous-brown pigment. Clamp connections none. All tissues nonamyloid. Habit, habitat, and distribution.-Solitary in mixed conifers including Pinus banksiana, Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Observations.-This species is known from a single collection in Michigan. It is likely to be regarded as a dark S. granulatus with boletinoid pore surface and broad patches of glandular surface on the stipe.
