The boletes of Michigan, by Alexander H. Smith and Harry D. Thiers.

BOLETUS 245 Tubes 9-13 mm deep, adnate to subdecurrent, dull yellow to ocher-yellow and unchanging when bruised; pores 1-1.5 mm broad, ochraceous and not staining when bruised. Stipe 4-9 cm long, 8-15 mm thick, equal or nearly so, yellow within, unchanging when injured, surface coarsely reticulate and pruinose from a reddish brown pruinose coating; base coated with pale yellow mycelium. Spores 11-13.5 X 3.84.5 l, smooth, elongate-inequilateral in profile, subfusoid in face view, color in KOH pale ochraceous, in Melzer's pale brownish ochraceous, wall about 0.2, thick, no amyloid reaction observed. Basidia 4-spored, 28-33 X 8-10., yellowish in KOH becoming hyaline. Pleurocystidia 34-55 (63) X 8-13 L, elongate-fusoid-ventricose to subfusoid, thin-walled, hyaline to yellowish from a diffusing yellow pigment in KOH, in Melzer's yellowish hyaline and content homogeneous. Caulocystidia clavate, 30-52 X 8-16 j, thin-walled, smooth, with some interior thickened patches in the wall of the enlarged part, pale yellow in KOH and subiculum hyphae also pale sulphur-yellow. Pileus cuticle a trichodermium the elements of which are divided into long and short cells, the latter often terminal and sphaerocyst-like or oval, the cells often disarticulating, in Melzer's the hyphae of the subcutis with some incrusting patches of dextrinoid pigment, yellow pigment diffusing into the mount when made in KOH. Clamp connections absent. Habit, habitat, and distribution.-On soil at edge of a bog, Burt Lake, Cheboygan County, July 8, 1967, N. J. Smith collector (A. H. Smith 74469). Observations.-This species is similar to B. illudens in many respects, but is distinguished by its scaly pileus and instantaneous purple reaction on the fresh pileus cuticle with ammonia. The hyphae of the context have some dextrinoid incrustations near the subcutis and these hyphae have a dull orange homogeneous content in Melzer's. The trichodermial elements have smooth thin pale yellow walls as revived in KOH and are very boldly defined. 127. Boletus hoseneae Smith & Thiers, sp. nov. Pileus 5-6 cm latus, udus, subhygrophanus, aurantio-cinnamomeus. Contextus luteus, immutabilis; pori olivaceolutei, immutabiles, lati. Stipes 6-7 cm longus, 10-12 mm crassus, sursum laete luteus, deorsum sordide vinaceus. Sporae (13) 14-17 X 4-5.5 j. Specimen typicum in
