72 The North American Species of Pholiota color with pileus and the same when well dried, (not darkening from base upward), but in age dingy yellow-brown over all, veil rudimentary. Spores 7-9 (10) x 4-5 pu, smooth, rusty brown in KOH, paler in Melzer's reagent, in face view oblong to subovate, occasionally somewhat angular, in profile somewhat bean-shaped to obscurely inequilateral, with a very minute but distinct apical pore. Basidia 4-spored, narrowly clavate, 20-24 x 6-8 Jt, yellow in KOH. Pleurocystidia none. Cheilocystidia clavate 18-30 x 9-15 pu, walls smooth and bright yellow in KOH. Caulocystidia scattered, clavate, 26-40 X 9-15,u, thin-walled, walls yellow in KOH, smooth. Gill trama of inflated subparallel hyphae with thin yellow walls (in KOH), narrower near the indistinct subhymenium. Pileus trama of hyaline to yellow-walled smooth inflated hyphal cells. Pileus cuticle a trichodermium, the elements of inflated smooth (rarely asperulate) yellow to tawny cells with thin-walls. Clamp connections present. All tissues inamyloid. HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION: Solitary to gregarious on aspen, Colorado, Smith 52459 (type), 50051, 51539, 52459, 52668. OBSERVATIONS: This variety may be confused with P. curvipes in the field because of its bright yellow color but the cheilocystidia are different. 22. Pholiota fagicola (Murr.) Kauffman, Amer. Journ. Bot. 13: 28. 1926. Gymnopilus fagicola Murrill, North Amer. Fl. 10: 201. 1917. Pileus 2 cm broad, hemispheric, not fully expanding, slightly umbonate, uniformly fulvous, cespitose, surface dry, densely imbricate-squamulose. Lamellae adnate, melleous to ferruginous, distant, arcuate, broad, edges beautifully crenulate and yellow. Stipe 3 cm long, 2 mm thick, ochraceous, becoming darker at the base, rough with rather coarse fibrils, equal, slender, rather tough, solid, dry. Spores (5.5)6-8.5 (9) x (3.5) 4-5 Ap, elliptic in face view inequilateral to bean-shaped in profile, smooth, no germ pore visible. Basidia 24-28 x 5-6,t, 4-spored. Pleurocystidia present as brown basidioles 24-30 x 4-6 pt, Cheilocystidia 25-66 x 5-9,u, in tufts, cylindric-capitate, colorless or brown. Caulocystidia scattered, few, cylindric-capitate, similar to the cheilocystidia. Gill trama subparallel, hyphae 6-9 p, wide, yellow to brownish in KOH, subhymenium not gelatinous. Pileus trama radially interwoven. Pileus cutis a well-defined zone of yellowish brown hyphae to dark rusty brown, bearing mounds of more or less erect columns of hyphae and some clavate pileocystidia 34-52 x 6-10,u. Clamp connections present. HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION: On a beech log, July, New York. Type studied.
