The North American species of Pholiota, by Alexander H. Smith and L. R. Hesler.

386 The North American Species of Pholiota (1913). We have studied his collection (2827) and find it to be P. terrestris. Pholiota togularis (Fr.) Kummer, Der Fuhrer in die Pilzkunde p. 85. 1871. see Pholiotina togularis (Fr.) Fayod ex Singer. Ploliota trachyspora C. 8c C. apud Overholts, Missouri Bot. Gard. Annals. 14: 125. 1927. This is a Rozites or a Cortinarius. Pholiota tuberculosa (Fr.) Kummer, Der Fuhrer in die Pilzkunde p. 83. 1871. Reported from Michigan by Harper (1913: 489). We have studied Harper's collection from Michigan and conclude that it is P. flammans (the variant with a distinct gelatinous pellicle). It is clearly not the same as material of P. tuberculosa from Great Britain identified by P. D. Orton. Pholiota unicolor (Fr.) Gillet, Champ. Fr. Hymen. p. 436. 1878. see Galerina iunicolor (Fr.) Singer. Pholiota ventricosa Earle, Bull. N. Y. State Bot. Garden 2: 341. 1902. A probable synonym of Gymnopilhs spectabilis see Singer (1963). Pholiota vermiflua (Pk.) Saccardo, Syll. Fung. 5: 739. 1887. see Agr-ocybe dura. Pholiota villosa (Fr.) Saccardo, Syll. Fung. 5: 752. 1887. Reported from the Pacific Coast. Overholts (1927) thought it was Pholiota (Gymnopilus) spectabilis. Pholiota viscida (Pk.) Kauffman, Amer. Journ. Bot. 13: 29. 1926. see Galerina viscida (Pk.) Smitli & Singer, Monogr. on the Genus Galerina Earle, p. 244. 1964. Ploliota washingtonensis Murrill, Mycologia 4: 259. 1912. see Agrocybe ombrophila. APPENDIX In the course of studying Gymnopilus Hesler has studied the types of Flammula olivacea Pat., F. aureoviridis Pat. and F. vinicolor Pat. His type studies are given below; New combinations are withheld pending study of fresl material. Flammula aureoviridis Pat. Coll. by Duss, No. 816, on decayed wood, Camp Jacob, Guadeloupe, Farlow Herb. Spores 6-8.5 X (3.5) 4-4.5 /L, ellipsoid to subovoid, inequilateral in profile, smooth, truncate (germ pore large), brownish in KOH, yellowish brown in Melzer's reagent. Basidia unsuitable for study.
