The North American species of Pholiota, by Alexander H. Smith and L. R. Hesler.

342 The North American Species of Pholiota cystidia 26-48 X 7-15 F, broadly ventricose, content cinnamon brown and reticulate as revived in KOH. Caulocystidia none. Gill trama of parallel hyphae ochraceous to rusty in thick sections (in KOH) narrow (but all relatively immature), smooth; subhymenium gelatinous. Pileus cutis a very thick gelatinous pellicle of narrow (2-3 /x) hyphae with walls slightly thickened and also some ornamented inconspicuously; hypodermium of bright rusty brown floccose hyphae 3-8 up diam. and with tawny incrustations. Context hyphae with inflated cells, walls thin, smooth and yellowish in KOH or Melzer's sol. (hyaline when single hyphae are isolated). Clamp connections present. All hyphae inamyloid. HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION: On soil under spruce. McCall, Idaho. 5 Aug. 1958. Smith 59589, type. OBSERVATIONS: This species is distinguished by the heavy yellow veil and an outer layer which leaves brown squamules over the lower part of the stipe. The avellaneous gills were conspicuous in the young basidiocarps but became olivaceous in drying. The species is closely related to P. sublubrica. However the pleurocystidia of that species do not have the brown content revived in KOH as noted for P. avellaneifolia, and for the latter they more closely resemble those of P. polychroa in shape than those of P. sublubrica. The spores of the latter are paler in Melzer's reagent than in KOH, whereas they are about the same in P. avellaneifolia. 186. Pholiota lubrica (Fr.) Singer. Agar. In Mod. Tax. p. 516. 1951. Agaricus lubricus Fries, Syst. Myc. 1: 252. 1821. Dryophila lubrica (Fr.) Quelet, Enchir. Fung. p. 70. 1886. Illustrations: Text figs. 418-420; pl. 84. var. lubrica Pileus 4-8 cm broad (estimated), glabrous, very viscid, when young almost ivory-colored (pale yellowish) and with an almost blackish-red central spot, when older pale brown ochre with the spot more extended and dark reddish brown. Lamellae almost white at first, finally colored as in P. lenta close, medium broad. Stipe 5-8 cm long, 4-6 mm thick (estimated). Pallid in young specimens and faintly white floccose, as dried evenly melleous overall (about like the dried gills in color). Spores 6-7.5 X 3.5-4.2,L, smooth, apical pore barely visible under a 1.4 NA oil im. lens; shape in face view elliptic to oblong, in profile more or less oblong; color in KOH ochraceous to pale tawny, in Melzer's reagent about the same; wall about 0.25 /u thick. Basidia 4-spored, 20-24 X 5-6.5 /x, narrowly clavate, hyaline in KOH and merely yellowish in Melzer's reagent. Pleurocystidia abundant 35-64 X 13-18(20) /. fusoid-ventricose with obtuse apex to utriform, neck tapered from ventricose part to apex and 6-8 / diam. near apex, smooth,
