Smith * Hesler 283 Pileus 1-3 cm latus, late convexus, demum planus vel subdepressus, glutinosus, glaber, subbadius. Contextus cartilagineus, brunneolus; odor nullus, sapor subsaponaceo-farinaceus, cum FeSO4 olivaceo. Lamellae albae demum cinnamomeae, confertae, latae, adnatae. Stipes 1.5-3 cm longus, 3-6 mm crassus, equalis, cavus, dersum demum fulvus, sursum albus ct pruinosus. Vellum sordide pallide cinnamomeum. Sporae 6-7.5 x 3.5-4.2 pJ. Pleurocystidia 54-70 x 9-14 p, fusoide ventricosa. Specimen typicum in Herb. Mich. conservatum est., legit prope Upper Priest Lake, Boundary Co., Idaho, 11 Oct. 1966. Smith 74095. Pileus 1-3 cm broad, broadly convex with an inrolled margin, expanding to plane or slightly depressed, surface glutinous, glabrous, bay brown (pale to dark). Context pliant, watery brownish, odor none; taste very disagreeable (somewhat soapy farinaceous), with FeSO4 olivaceus. Lamellae whitish becoming dull cinnamon, close to crowded, moderately broad, thin, adnate becoming adnexed; edges even, pallid. Stipe 1.5-3 cm long, 3-6 mm thick, equal, hollow, soon rusty over the base (but not witllin), coated up to the apical veil zone with a dull cinnamon sheath which breaks up into patches, apex whitish and pruinose. Spores 6-7.5 x 3.5-4.2 JL, minute pore present at apex; shape in face view elliptic to slightly ovate, some nearly oblong, in profile elliptic to obscurely inequilateral; dull cinnamon brown in both KOH and Melzer's sol.; wall about 0.25 pt thick. Basidia 4-spored, 20-36 X 5-6 (7) pu, narrowly clavate, hyaline in KOH. Pleurocystidia abundant, 54-70 X 9-14 p., fusoid-ventricose with long narrow pedicels, content hyaline to yellowish in KOH, coagulated content not distinctively colored, walls thin and hyaline. Cheilocystidia 26-38 x 8-12 pu, mostly fusoid-ventricose with obtuse apex, content colloidal but not distinctively colored in KOH or Melzer's, walls thin and hyaline. Caulocystidia 55-70 x 9-12 pu scattered, hyaline, thin-walled, smootl, apex obtuse to slightly rounded. Gill trama, an area of hyaline thin walled narrow parallel hyphae witl some oleiferous hyphae scattered through it; subhymenium a gelatinous layer of narrow hyphae 2-4 pu diam. Pileus cutis a thick layer of widely spaced narrow (2-3 pj) hyphae with yellow slightly incrusted walls as revived in KOH (possibly a trichodermium in very young material); area next to hypodermium of narrow non-gelatinous hypliae with rather coarse incrustations; hypodermium proper of closely packed orange-brown (in KOH) incrusted hyphae with some cells up to 12 y/ or more in diam. Context yellow to hyaline in KOH, closely arranged and with thin smooth walls. Clamp connections present.
