Context pliant, watery brownish, odor and taste not distinctive, FeSO4
slowly olivaceous.
Lamellae pale yellow when immature, dull cinnamon when mature,
close to nearly subdistant, broad, broadly adnate to short decurrent,
thin, edges even.
Stipe 2.5-6 cm long, 3-6 mm thick, stuffed, equal, pallid above, becoming rusty cinnamon from the base upward, veil thin, fibrillose, pallid,
leaving scattered fibrils on the stipe.
Spores 6-7 x 3.5-4 a, smooth, with scarcely any sign of an apical
pore (very minute); shape in face view elliptic to ovate, in profile
obscurely bean-shaped to obscurely inequilateral, wall about 0.25.I thick;
pale dull cinnamon in KOH, in Melzer's reagent no appreciable change.
Basidia 16-25 x 6-7.5 ut, 4-spored, clavate many yellow in KOH
from a colored content. Pleurocystidia 50-70 x 10-16 pu fusoid-ventricose,
content as revived in KOH yellow, walls up to 1 u. thick in ventricose
part in many of the individuals, some with adhering material near the
base of the neck. Cheilocystidia similar to the pleurocystidia but shorter.
Cauloc'stidia up to 20 ut broad, clavate to vesiculose or fusoid-ventricose,
yellow to hyaline, walls thin or some with thickened walls in pedicel,
content hyaline to yellowish, granular in apex in some.
Gill trama with a central area of parallel to subparallel hyphae with
thin smooth walls hyaline in KOH, cells finally considerably inflated;
subhymenium gelatinous, of narrow, branched hyphae. Pileus cutis a
gelatinous pellicle of ochraceous encrusted hyphae 3-5 pt diam. with
outlines very distinct; hypodermium of bright ochraceous fulvous hyphae
in KOH, the walls somewhat roughened and cells more or less enlarged.
Context hyphae hyaline to greenish-hyaline in KOH, closely arranged,
walls thin and smooth. Clamp connections present.
HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION: On conifer slash, Upper Priest
River, Boundary County, Idaho. Oct. 13, 1966. Smith 74169, type.
OBSERVATIONS: This poses a problem recurring throughout the subgenera Flammuzloides and Pholiota: Namely variants distinguished by the
presence of yellow pigment in some part of the basidiocarp in species
not normally having it. This situation caused confusion between P. lenta
and P. gummosa in North America. We found it in P. terrestris in 1947
and 1966, in P. occidentalis as described here, and the degree to which
yellow is evident in the P. spumosa complex causes confusion there. Its
development may also be associated with partial sterility as we have
noted many times in Naematoloma.

Pileus 2-5 cm latus,convexus, glaber, viscidus, demum rivulosus,
cinnanmomeus; lamellae pallide luteae, latae, subdistantes; stipes 2-4 cm
longus, 3-6 mm crassus, pallidus, deorsum demum subcinnamomeus,
sporae 6-7.5 x 3.5-4.2 p.; pleurocystidia 54-78 x 8-12(15) pu, crassotuni
