OBSERVATIONS: In its wide spores, broad gills, coloration and yellow
veil the species is close to P. pulchella especially var. brevipes, but is
readily distinct by its thick walled pleurocystidia, and habitat on oak. It
was mistaken at first for P. velaglutinosa with "reduced" veil and filed as
a variant of that species. The spores, habitat and lack of a gelatinous veil
readily distinguish it.

Pileus 3-7 cm latus, late convexus vel obtuse umbonatus, ad centrum
vinaceo brunneus, ad marginem subluteus, glutinosus; stipes 3-7 cm
longus, 3-8 mm crassus, luteo fibrillosus. Vellum siccum, luteum; sporae
7-9 x 5-6 Fi; pleurocystidia 60-85 X 9-18 F fusoide ventricosa, crasso
tunicata. Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatun est; legit
prope Cave Junction, Ore., 1 Dec. 1937. Smith 9318, in pinetis.
Pileus 3-7 cm broad, obtuse to convex, expanding to broadly convex
or with a slight umbo, margin inrolled at first, margin at first decorated
by superficial remains of the veil, glabrescent, slimy viscid; colors dull to
vinaceous brown over the disc and pale ochraceous to pallid brownish on
margin, marginal area yellowish in dried specimens. Context pliant, yellowish in age, odor and taste not recorded.
Lamellae close, adnate or with a decurrent tooth moderately close
to subdistant, yellowish pallid young, soon olivaceous-yellow and then
dull rusty brown, edges even.
Stipe 3-7 cm long, 3-8 mm thick, equal, apex yellowish and silkyfibrillose, fibrillose downward from the annular fibrillose zone left by the
broken veil, veil fibrils pale yellow, veil dry or with a thin layer of slime
over exterior which extends from the cap margin a short distance; stipe
dry below veil line, not appreciably discolored below-merely dingy
brownish.
Spores dark rusty brown (near russet in deposits on stipe) in mass,
7-9 x 5-6 tu, smooth, apical pore distinct but minute, shape in face view
broadly ovate to broadly elliptic, in profile broadly elliptic to very obscurely inequilateral; color in KOH dull tawny, fading to pale ochraceous, slightly paler in Melzer's reagent; wall about 0.25 /L thick.
Basidia 4-spored, 18-25 x 6.5-9 f, broadly clavate, many with
ochraceous content in KOH; pleurocystidia 60-85 X 9-18 /z fusoidventricose, neck greatly elongated, apex 4-6 /u broad, obtuse to subacute,
wall 1-3 u thick in ventricose part; content yellowish to hyaline in KOH
and homogeneous or as a colloidal plug of material in the neck, content
scarcely colored in Melzer's reagent. Cheilocystidia subclavate to ventricose and 30-55 X 8-12 FL or 40-60 x 9-15, and fusoid-ventricose, mostly
