The virgate pileus, whitish gills when young, sharp FeSO4 reaction of the context, white veil and whitish stipe apex are distinctive field characters along with the terrestrial habitat. 125. Pholiota flavopallida sp. nov. Pileus 2-5.5 cm latus, plano-umbonatus, glutinosus, glaber, pallide flavus vel luteolus ad centrum subfulvus. Contextus luteolus. Stipes 3-4 cm longus, 3-5 mm crassus, aequalis, fibrillosus, deorsum subfulvus, sur-sum pallidus; velum album, fibrillosum. Sporae 5-6(7) x 3-3.5 t. Pleurocystidia 40-56 x 12-17 A, fusoide ventricosa vel subfusoidea, tenuitunicata vel rare subcrassotunicata (+ 0.5 I). Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich. conservatum est; legit prope Nordman, Idaho. 11 Nov. 1956. Smith 54485. Pileus 2-5.5 cm broad, convex to plano-umbonate, glutinous, glabrous, marginal area pale yellow ("pale pinkish-buff" to "ivory-yellow"), disc clay-color to dingy pale tawny, margin lacerate at times. Context pallid becoming yellowish, green in FeSO4, odor not distinctive, taste mild. Lamellae narrow, close, adnate to short decurrent, whitish becoming yellowish and finally dingy cinnamon to brown ("Verona-brown"). Stipe 3-4 cm long, 3-5 mm thick, white above, clay-color to rusty brown below, equal or base enlarged somewhat, thinly fibrillose from the poorly developed veil. Apex silky to silky-pruinose. Spores 5-6 (7) x 3-3.5 Iu, ochraceous to pale tan in KOH and merely tinged cinnamon in Melzer's reagent, smooth, apical pore exceedingly minute, wall thin (scarcely visible as a double line), in face view oblong to narrowly elliptic, in profile slightly bean-shaped to oblong. Basidia 16-20 x 4-5,X, mostly 4-spored, narrowly clavate, yellowish in KOH and in Melzer's sol. Pleurocystidia 40-56 x 12-17 pI fusoidventricose to subfusoid, obese, thin-walled or with wall up to 0.5 I, thick, smooth, apex rounded to obtuse, content often yellow in KOH when first revived.
