Smith ~ Hesler 199 spicuous lacterate often recurved scales from base to annulus; annulus ragged, underside separating into two layers and dingy cinnamon, upper layer cinnamon; apex of stipe dingy, ground color below ring pale dull cinnamon, becoming russet from base up where bruised. Spore deposit "russet" moist, "Verona brown" when moisture has escaped. Spores 5-6 X 3.5-4,/, wall smooth, scarcely thickened, ~0.25 /A, dull brown in KOH and Melzer's; elliptic in face view, nearly so in profile, no apical pore evident. Pleurocystidia as large chrysocystidia 36-47 X 9-15 /,, subclavate-mucronate, hyaline-refractive with even content (in KOH) or with a dark brown content more or less reticulate in some, scarcely projecting. Cheilocystidia 26-42 x 8-13 p/, obtusely fusoid ventricose to narrowly clavate but tapered slightly near apex in some, thin walled, lacking any distinctive content, walls faintly yellowish as first when revived in KOH but fading. Subhymenium gelatinous Pileus cutis a thick gelatinous layer, the hyphae narrow (2-4 u) and with distinctly outlined walls as revived in KOH, hyaline to yellowish. Hypoderm orange-brown in KOH, of compactly arranged hyphae. Clamp connections present. HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION: Caespitose on a log of butternut (Jiuglans cinerca), Sharon Hollow, Mich. Sept. 2, 1967. Smith 75074. This species is most similar to P. terrestris but is readily distinct by the colors, color changes and habitat. It is an intermediate between stirps Adiposa and stirps Squarrosoides. 101. Pholiota barrowsii sp. nov. Illustrations: Text figs. 202-203. Pileus — 8 cm latus, late convexus, viscidus, squamosus, luteus; squamae subbfulvac. Contextus pallidus demum pallide luteus. Lamellae latae, adnatae, confertae, pallide ochracea demum luteo brunneae. Stipes 4-9 cm longus, 5-12 mm crassus, solidus, deorsum fulvus et fibrillose sqluamosus vel flocculosius, sursum sericeus. Sporae 5-6.5 x 3-3.5 /f. Pleurocystidia 30-56(60) X 7-14 i,, clavata vel clavato-mucronata. Cheilocystidia 20-28 x 5-9 ix. Specimen typicum in Herb. Univ. of Mich. conservatum est; legit prope Santa Fe, New Mexico, Aug. 1957. Chas. Barrows 504. Pileus 4-8 cm broad, convex becoming nearly plane, surface covered with coarse dry scales as in P. squarrosa, the scales dingy tawny brownish as dried, yellow ground color reminding one of P. squarroso-adiposa and near ochre yellow as dried, viscid in age as scales wear away from the thick gelatinous pellicle. Context pallid becoming yellowish and as dried pale buff, odor and taste mild. Lamellae broad, bluntly adnate, in age adnexed, close, pallid ochraceous becoming near "buckthorn brown" (fairly dark clay-color), edges even.
