The North American species of Pholiota, by Alexander H. Smith and L. R. Hesler.

142 The North American Species of Pholiota faintly wrinkled as revived in KOH, apex not conspicuously truncate, wall thickened to 0.75-1 u. and pale tawny in Melzer's sol. Basidia 4-spored, 26-34 x 9-11 /p, projecting when sporulating, hyaline to yellowish in KOH. Pleurocystidia present 35-50 X 10-15 pt, fusoid-ventricose to clavate-mucronate, beaked or with several protuberances over apical region, rarely ventricose with a broadly rounded apex, as revived in KOH with an amorphous highly refractive interior body or amorphous content variously disposed. Cheilocystidia abundant, 32-50 X 6-12 /p, a mixture of leptocystidia and chryosocystidia, fusoid-ventricose to clavate-mucronate. Caulocystidia merely hyphal ends 4-9 pu wide or these narrowly clavate, variable in length. Gill trama hyphae subparallel, pale yellow revived in KOH, cells 5-15 /i broad, walls thin so slightly thickened and smooth; subhymenium cellular and hyphal walls not gelatinous. Pileus with a tough gelatinous pellicle of narrow 3-5 u, wide hyphae with walls smooth to slightly incrusted; hypodermium yellow in KOH, hyphal cells inflated (at times up to 20 fu or more), the walls thin and smooth to slightly roughened as revived in KOH. Clamp connections present. HABIT, HABITAT, AND DISTRIBUTION: Gregarious in or along the edges of bogs or on boggy soil, typically northern, and often abundant during dry seasons. Material from New York, Michigan and Washington as well as Ontario in Canada has been examined. OBSERVATIONS: This is a most distinctive species by virtue of the olive to olive-bronze viscid pileus, the dull cinnamon-brown spore deposit, large spores and whitish gills. The ornamentation of the spores is not a constant feature in this species and when present is best disregarded as a generic feature. MATERIAL EXAMINED: MICHIGAN: Smith 33-788, 15483, 21157, 31890, 41657, 43906, 43907. NEW YORK: Smith 207, 334, 371, 553, 604; Peck's type of Agaricus elatior. WASHINGTON: Smith 2596, 16598, 40361, 40837, 40846. CANADA (ONTARIO): Smith 4015. 69. Pholiota humidicola (Murr.) comb. nov. Nairoria hbtrnidicola Murrill, North Amer. Fl. 10: 174. 1917. Nacmiatoloma hulridicola (Murr.) Smith, Mycologia 40: 693. 1948. Illustrations: Text figs. 160-161. Pileus 10-20 mm broad, obtuse to convex and when young the margin incurved, expanding to broadly convex or plane, at times the margin remaining decurved, surface glabrous, moist, dull cinnamon to orange-tawny on disc ("Sayal-brown" to brighter), margin ochraceous and gradually becoming paler, in age more or less olivaceous ("Isabellacolor" to more olive). Context thin, pliant, yellowish, odor none. Lamellae broadly adnate and in age with a decurrent tooth, subdistant, very broad, pallid to dingy pale yellow, drying dingy tawny to clay color, edges white-fimbriate but even.
