49. Pholiota galerinoides sp. nov.
Pileus 10-15 mm latus, glabrosus, "russet" demum cinnamomeo-brunneus deinde pallide fulvus. Odore et gustu non proprius. Lamellae late
adnatae, latae, confertae vel subdistantes, paene "russet" demum brunneae
recentes, concolores maturae, marginibus crenulatae. Stipes 1-2 cm longus, paene 1.5 mm crassus, pallido-brunneus deinde obscurior, infra veli
reliqua. Sporae 7-9.5(10.5) x (3.5)4-5 au, ellipsoideae vel oblongae, planae,
truncatae, crassitunicatae. Pleurocystidia 28-42 X 9-14 uI, clavata; cheilocystidia 20-38 x 4-7 p., ampullacea. Cuticula non accurate distincta.
Caulocystidia acervatim, pleurocystidis et cheilocystidiis similia. Specimen
typicum in Herb. Univ. Mich.; lectum in Mt. Rainier National Park, 6
Oct. 1952, Smith 40612.
Pileus 10-15 mm broad, convex with a straight margin, expanding
to broadly convex to nearly plane, surface viscid, glabrous, "russet" to
"cinnamon brown," fading to dark rusty brown, hygrophanous, translucent-striate on margin before fading, when faded a dingy ochraceous
tan. Context thin, very fragile, odor and taste not distinctive.
Lamellae broad, close to subdistant, broadly adnate, russet to cocoacolor when young, concolorous with moist pileus when mature, edges
minutely crenulate.
Stipe 1-2 cm long, about 1.5 mm thick, equal, fragile, tubular, paler
than the gills near apex, soon very dark russet brown over basal area,
lower portion dotted with flecks of veil tissue, apex pruinose, in age
nearly glabrous.
Spores 7-9 (10.5) X (3.5)4-4.5 uL, smooth, wall slightly thickened,
apex truncate from a small apical pore; in face view narrowly elliptic to
oblong, in profile nearly oblong to obscurely inequilateral, pale ochraceous in H2O when fresh, pale cinnamon as revived in KOH; apiculus
small but readily apparent; in Melzer's reagent pale cinnamon.
Basidia 4-spored, 18-22 x 5-6 ip, hyaline in KOH and Melzer's
reagent, clavate. Pleurocystidia 28-42 x 9-14 p/, clavate to utriform,
hyaline in KOH, content homogeneous, thin-walled, smooth. Cheilocystidia 20-35 X 4-7 IX, lanceolate to ventricose-rostrate, the neck often
only 2 I. thick, apex acute to subcapitate, hyaline, thin-walled, content
homogeneous. Caulocystidia scattered, clavate, mostly thin-walled but wall
colored in KOH and in some slightly incrusted. Hyphae of the stipe
cortex bright cinnamon in KOH and smooth, cells 8-18 p/ wide.
Gill trama of parallel non-gelatinous hyphae with incrusted cinnamon-colored walls (especially near the thin nongelatinous subhymenial
area). Pileus trama of interwoven cinnamon colored pigment incrusted
hyphae and revived in KOH. Pileus cutis a well developed pellicle of
gelatinous hyphae 3-5 Iu diam., hyaline in KOH and with incrustations
only on the hyphae nearest the context. Clamp connections present. All
hyphae non-amyloid.
