Wilson's Reply Settled
by Changes in Germany
BASEL. Oct. 17.-Baron Burian, the
Austro-Hungarian foreign minister,
spoke in the most optimistic manner of
the prospects for an early peace in addressing the foreign affairs committee
of the Austrian delegations at a meeting on Wednesday, says a Vienna despatch.
"1 nourish the hope today most
fully." said he. for If the contents of
President Wilson's reply are studied
there Is nothing to be found to frustrate ettch a hope or even to delay its
re lIzat ion considerably.
"The political point In President Wil-.
son's reply Is settled," Burian detlared, "as Germany's reply will undoubl edly establish, by the modifications which are being made in the constitution.

Lille has been captured by the
British.
Allied pressure on all sides of the
salient of which the city was the
center comDelled the enemy to give it
up. It is the largest city of France
captuaed by the Germans and for four
yeas. has been an important unit of
the eemy defense system.
Haig Launches New Blow
The fall of Lille comes almost
simultaneously with the launching of
an offensive by *'ield Marshal Haig
against the new German defenses
south of Valenciennes. Ills troops
today are storming forward south of
La Cateau across the Salle river where
they were halted late last week.
New Successes in Flanders
In Flanders the allies have gained
important new successes- while from
the Olse to the Meuse the allied pressure is maintained strongly. In the
angle north of Lann the Germans apparently are retiring from between
the Glee and the Serre rivers.
Americans May be in New Drive
Since the beginning of the week
there has been little heavy lighting in
the area southeast of Cambral, where
the British and Americans made such
rapid strides last week after the capture of Cambral. The Germans resisated strongly on the linet of the
Belle and it is these defenses that
the British and probably the Americans under the same command are
assaulting.
