WASHINGTON, Oct. 4.-The Amerloan steamer Herman Freach. a sm&l
eargo carrier, manned by a navy crew
anLd in the oversee supply service.,
has been sunk in collision at sea,
with a loss of probably 50 of her
crew.
The vessel collided at night with the
meric aboutank steamship George G.
ry, about 1 miles sutheast of
the Nova Scotian coast, and went
down in seven minutes. She carried,a crew of about 128 officers and 76
men, and survivors reported number
only 41.

Both vessels were cargo carriers in
army supply transport service. The
Brach was a ship of about 4000
tons gross, carrying Acrew of about
50 oiers and men, bnd the Henry is
a tanker. Since only 41 of the
reach's crew are accounted for. it
is feared thare was heavy loss of life.

Gatherings Discouraged
Lowell- doctors reported 127 new
cases of influenza at the ofice of
the board of health up to noon today, bringing the total to date to
2798. Thirteen more deaths were
reported, making a total of 88.
At the same hour yesterday 238
new cases had been reported and for
that reason indications point to a decline in the epidemic. The authoriUes believe that continued cold
weather will have a salutary effect
on the disease.
With the exception of brief services in the Catholic churches, the
city will be closed down tight Bunday. The Lowell federation of
churches voted last evening to reconmmead that all the churches which
are members of tle orfganzationwhich includes practically- all the
Protestant churches. of the city-omit
all services on Sunday.

John P. Quinn, one of Lowell's oldeat and best known business men. died
this afternoon at one o'clock at his
home in East Chelmsford, following
an illness of only a week's duration.
Mr. Quinn's death Is atttibuted to
pneumonia.
For the past 25 years Mr. Quinn had
been engaged in the. wholesale and
retail coal and wood business in-thip
city, his present office and yard.belng at Gorham and Dix streets. rom
