Tenn., Oct. 1.--(Special. --The first victim of the influenza epidemic that has occurred in the Newbern section was the 2-monthsold infant of Murray Fulghum, a farmer who resides near Newrbern. Richardson, aelerk in the emDloy of the Southern Express Company, was urrested yesterday afternoon by D rtectives McCarver and Giles, and,locked up at the police station on chtarges of grand and petit larceny. Hp arrest climaxed an investigation of' the systematic theft of clothes and other articles from the express office, where he ha.s been employed for the past two years. Among the stolen articles recovered by the officers following the arrest were three silk dresses valued at $65'each, a handsome muff and several shirts. W. Peter to Address Mission Boards-En Route to France. An interesting visitor at the Methodist Publishing House today is Dr. WV. W. Peter, representing the -Gina Medical Mission Association, who is here to confer with the mission boards of the M. E. Church, South. and the Southern Presbyterian churches. He will address the boards in the interest of health education in China. Dr. Peter is a man of national reputation and his work in China in behalf of bettering the health and sanitary conditions there has been recogn)zed by the government of this country and by the nations of the Orient. The work in behalf of health conditions is recogntzed as being badly needed by the Chinese nation. I)r. Peter will sail for France the latter part of the week for service among the Chinese laboring battalion. there being 200,000 Chinese laboring men in Prance at the present Lime, and fifteen missionaries have been set apart by the boards of the various churches to work among them. -tr.
