Isaac. P. Smith, well known Albanian,'
end brother of E. LaeRoy Smith,' of
Smith &c Herrick,. is in a hospital in_
France with a fighting chance to sace
his rlht leg from amputation. He was
a private in the Fourteenth Canadian
infantry and was wounded in acttou
September 27. He has written a
cheerful letter to his friend. Bowen
Staley, of this city, under date of October 8, as follows:
"This is the first I h lve felt able to
write, and only undertake the job now
because you have been so kind to me. I
am badly wounded in the right thigh by
a big piece of shrapnet (September 27),
which was in the flsh for 30 hours and
it was 58 hours before the wound was
clensed and a drain inserted so the
outcome1 is uncertain. ikowever,
owing to my perfect condition, I have
rother more than a fiahting chance to
save the leg. If it is saved it will be
alast as good as new, and If it Isn'toh, well, I'll only have to wear one shoe
end the 'aittin' will he as good as ever,
lamr flat o my hark. leg In a cradle,
foot hoisted a foot or more, aud maybe
will he like that for 10 weeks or more.
I shall not write again tilt I can alt ul'.
