Description

General Description: Spines in dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins; ctenoid scales; no opercular spine; lateral line does not extend onto caudal fin.
Specific Description: Length of dorsal fin base projects from dorsal origin to eye or cheek; body depth enters less than 2.4 in standard length; mouth oblique.

Distribution

Distribution: Upper Mississippi drainage; Lake of the Woods to Ottawa drainage; Great Lakes-St. Lawrence to Champlain; south to Florida to Texas; coastal drainage to North Carolina. Widely introduced.

Ecology

Ecology: Chiefly in rather clear, weedy lakes, usually in larger streams, lakes, and impoundments. Males build nests near vegetation. Feed on insects, crustaceans, fishes. Length to 40 cm. Beautiful aquarium fishes.
