Description

General Description: Spines in the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins; dorsal fins usually separated; anal fin with 1 or 2 spines; ctenoid scales; thoracic pelvic fins; usually barred rather than striped color patterns.
Specific Description: Long dorsal fin with 5-9 short spines; color pattern of vertical bars, with some stripes in breeding males.

Distribution

Distribution: Eastern Mississippi drainage; Great Lakes east of Lake Michigan; St. Lawrence drainage; Mohawk drainage; northern Susquehanna drainage; south to Tennessee drainage.

Ecology

Ecology: On gravel bottom, slow shallow riffles in streams; some lakes, including Great Lakes shores. Length to 8 cm.
