Description

General Description: Spines in the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins; dorsal fins usually separated; anal fin with 1 or 2 spines; ctenoid scales; thoracic pelvic fins; usually barred rather than striped color patterns.
Specific Description: No lateral line; dorsal spines usually 6; 32-37scale rows; teardrop angled backward.

Distribution

Distribution: Upper Mississippi drainage; southern Great Lakes drainage.

Ecology

Ecology: Climb in dense vegetation in quiet waters. Feed on small crustaceans and aquatic insects. Length 4 cm in females, 2.5 cm in males.
