Description

General Description: Two dorsal fins, without spines; dorsal, caudal, and anal fins separate; small scales.
Specific Description: Single barbel on chin; long dorsal and anal fins; elongate shape.

Distribution

Distribution: Northern Eurasia and North America south to the Columbia, Missouri, Mississippi, Hudson Bay, Ungava Bay, Great Lakes-St. Lawrence, Delaware, and Ohio drainages.

Ecology

Ecology: In medium to large streams and cold, deep lakes. Also in larger streams, preferring patches of plants and debris when young, stony riffles when half-grown, and undercut banks when adult. Enters brackish waters. Feed on fishes. Length to 80 cm.
