Description

General Description
These are soft-rayed fishes with toothless jaws, but morphologically specialized fifth gill arches with one or two rows of distinctive teeth. Scales are cycloid, the head is scaleless, there are 19 principal caudal rays and in native American forms the dorsal and anal fins are short. The anal fin is closer to the middle of the body than to the caudal fin.
Specific Description
7 anal rays; pigment forms "equal signs" along lateral line scales; wedge-shaped caudal spot; dorsal stripe expands at dorsal fin origin but disappears near center of dorsal fin; line of pigment above lateral band.

Distribution

Distribution
Mississippi drainage, lower Great Lakes drainage. (Two forms in the Great Lakes: typical widspread form and N. s. missuriensis, in LakeMichigan drainage of Indiana.)

Ecology

Ecology
Usually over sandy substrate in lakes and streams. Insectivorous. Length to 8 cm.
