Description

General Description
These are soft-rayed fishes with toothless jaws, but morphologically specialized fifth gill arches with one or two rows of distinctive teeth. Scales are cycloid, the head is scaleless, there are 19 principal caudal rays and in native American forms the dorsal and anal fins are short. The anal fin is closer to the middle of the body than to the caudal fin.
Specific Description
More than 24 predorsal scales; pepper-like spots on sides; dark pigment in front corner of dorsal fin; teeth 2,4-4,2; blue sides and red fins in breeding males.

Central Mississippi drainage; southern Great Lakesdrainage.

Ecology

Ecology
In sluggish, muddy streams. Spawns over centrarchid nests. Insectivorous. Length to 8 cm.
