Description
- General Description
- These have soft-rayed fins, cycloid scales, and scaleless heads. They have a superficial subterminal mouth with lips covered with taste buds. They lack teeth except in the throat, where each fifth gill arch has a row of 20 or more compressed teeth with small terminal hooks. They have 7 anal rays and 18 principal caudal rays. The middle of the anal fin is closer to the caudal fin than to the middle of the body.

- Short dorsal fin; subterminal mouth; absence of lateral line; 41-43 lateral scale rows; 9-10 dorsal fin rays; lateral blotches in young.
Distribution
- Distribution
- Southwest Great Lakes drainage; Ohio drainage; south to the Gulf of Mexico tributaries.
Ecology
- Ecology
- Generally inhabiting creeks of prairie regions. Feed on plankton and benthos. Length to 18 cm.
