Description

General Description: These have soft-rayed fins, cycloid scales, and scaleless heads. They have a protrusible, ventral mouth with fleshy lips covered with visible papillae or striations covered with taste buds. They lack teeth except in the throat, where each fifth gill arch has a row of 20 or more compressed teeth with small terminal hooks. They have 7 anal rays and 18 principal caudal rays. The middle of the anal fin is closer to the caudal fin than to the middle of the body.
Specific Description: Short dorsal fin; long face; papillose lips; dark colors; head concave between eyes.

Distribution

Distribution: Mississippi drainage; southern Great Lakes drainage.

Ecology

Ecology: Typically found on riffles of clear streams. Feed on benthos. Length to 60 cm.
