Mr. Alexander Ireland of Manchester, England, in the motto to his book on Emerson, calls attention to the following passage in Plutarch's Life of Cicero, telling of his consulting the oracle at Delphi, in his youth. "Upon his inquiring by what means he might rise to the greatest glory, the priestess bade him 'follow nature and not take the opinion of the multitude for his guide in life.'"
