CHAP. V. (Book 5)

Minde here was no mention of any Earth untill the third day, nither did God see the Earth that lay eternally hid under the wa∣ters until the third day he had commanded the waters to be ga∣thered unto one place, so that the earth must neds be eternally hid under the watets: likewise, the Gras, Herbs and Fruit trees, that did grow out of the earth, they had the seed in themselvs eter∣nally, God gave no seed to them, as is exprest, ver▪ 12. And the earth brought fort grss and herbs, yielding seed after its kind and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in it self after his kind, and God saw that it was good, and the Evening and the Morning were the third day.

The fourth day out of the sbstance of Water that was gather∣ed together unto one place, ver. 14. And God said, Let there be lights in the Firmament of Heaven to divide the day from the night, and let them be so tims and for seasons, and for days an years, ver. 16. And God made two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also, and God saw that it was good; and the Evening and the Morning were the fourth: so by faith we understand that God made the Body of the Sun, and the body of the Moon, and the bodies of the stars, of that substance and matter of water that was upon the face of the deep, and by the Power of his Word, speak∣ing into those bodies of water congealed by his word, gave light into them to shine upon the earth, and to run their course to the work God appointed them to do as long as this world doth last: Ffth day, God made out of the iubstance of water all manner of Fish, and grat Whales, and all manner of Fowl God made of the substance of water: so that whatever God made, he had ma••••••r and substance to make it of, and that God did never make any thing whatsoeve of nothing, For of nthing comes nothig. And the Evening and the Morning was the fifth day.

Ver 24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living crea∣tures after his kind, cattel, creeping things, and beasts of the earth after his kind, and it was so; so ver. 25. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattel after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and God saw that it was good; And in ver. 26. And God said, Let us make man in our own image and likeness. Here is Gods six days work. Now, let the Reader minde, that God made all these things spoken of before, out of these two eternal substan∣ces of Earth and Water, Likewise, God made out of the sub∣stance of Water the Firmament of Heaven, rhe Sun, Moon and Stars, Fishes, Whales and Fowl tha flie in the midst of Heaven were made out of the substance of water. the beasts of the field, cattel of all kinde, and all manner of creeping things upon the earth, and Man himself God made of the dust of this earth, that was an eternal Chaos until God in the beginning created or form∣ed it, as we see: Ad this take notice, that God made all things of the substance of water first, and God made the beast of the earth, and man of the sustance of earth last

Thus I have given the interpretation of Gods six days work, and how that the substance of Earth and Water was eternal, in their being an essence; and how that God out of these two sub∣stances of earth and water, did create or made all things what∣soever; all the light of Sun, Moon, Stars, and Firmament of hea∣ven, with all their bodies, and all other creatures whatsoever. that hath the breath of life in them, and that God did not make any thing whatsoever of nothing, as Penn doth blasphemously af∣firm, so that the Rader may see the gross ignorance of that opi∣nion, that God made this vast earth and waters of nothing, and the better understand the Answer to Penns Arguments, as follow∣eth.

First, as for that place Gen 1.1, 2. In the beginning God cre∣ated the heaven and the earth, and the earth was without forme

and void, I have answered bfore; s••••wing that Mose spake that last which should have been first, so that Penns Arguments built upon that Text falls to the ground.

Secondly, Penn quotes Isa. 48.2, 1. Hearken unto me, O Jacob, and Israel my called I am he, I am the first and also am the last, my Hand also hath laid the Foundation of the Earth; Penns Argu∣ment upon these words; Wherfore thus I argue, if God was before so much as the foundation of the Earth was laid, then was neither the Earth nor foundation of it from Eternity without God; but the Text affirms, that God was first or before the foundation was ever aid.

Answer, To what purpose is this Scripture alledged, for we do own that God is the first and the last, and that he was in being in Heaven above the Stars, and did create all manner of celestial creatures, spiritual bodies, as Angels, before th foundation of the Earth was laid; Now minde, though God was before the foundation of the earth was laid; he dth not say e was be∣fore the substance and matter of earth was; to speak plain. God doth not say he was before the dark sensless Chaos os earth and watr; for it is plain, that the earth was without form and void from the sight of God himself, n dakness wa upon the face of the deep, so that there was deep waters, and earth under the wa∣ters in the beginning when Gd began to create, and when Gods Spirit moved upon the fac of the deep waters, there was matter ad substance; thre was water and dakness for Gods Spirit to work upon before God begn to work or create, so that the dark waters must needs be thee before; i bfore God bgan to crat, or bsoe t e beginning, then eternal, except God did first span out of his geat vast spirit wi••••••ut a body ths dak waters, an then e sets himself to wrk to make light bodi s out of those dark watrr that came out of his g••••••t spirt, so that Gods Spiit without a body must needs be exceed••••g age▪ ta could cause such vast substances of arth and wa rs ou of his gr at vst Spiit without a bdy; I did not th••••k ••••at a piit without a

Page 30

body had bin so large, as Penn doth blasphemusly assert, yet by Penns Argument it must be so.

Again, if God mae this vast ••••rth ad waters of notig, would it not have b n easier fr God to have mae the Firmment, Sun, Moon and Stars, and all Fish, Fwl and beasts of te earth, and every thng tat ah the beath of life, and Man himsef, of no∣thing; God might easir have made these excellent craures of nothing, then for hm to mak this great vast earth and waters of nothing; I do amie that the imagination of man should conceiv such a monstrous God that can make such great sub∣stances of earth and water, and the grea rock and mighty stones in the eat of nohing; but Penns God is a pirt without a bdy, that can do all this by is own confession; but my God that hath a body of his own never did any such thing he always ha matter and power to make his cratu es of; methinks, it s a wonderful great Pwer in God to raise the dead gain at the last day, and to reward every man according to his woks, as th Scriptures saith, This is a great work for God to do, yet this power is nothing in comparison of such a pow•••• tat could make this vast ea th and waters of nothing, then by te same power he may bring them to nothing again so tat as they were made of nothing, so they shall turn to nothing agai; is this were so, it would be well for Penn and all Rprobates to be turned into nothing, then rheir conditi∣on woud be as happy as we that are someting, and shall be som∣thing again in th Resurrcton.

And as fo Gods laying the foundation of the earth, we do ac∣knowledge that God id lay the foundation of the earth in the beginning, bu the earth was before he laid the foundation, for he could nt lay a foundaion o earth except he had earth to lay, it doth not say that God said the foundation of ths earth with notig: but in the beginning, after God had found out this earth that was eternally bid under the dep waters, then God laid the foundation of the earth by the Power of his Word, so

Page 31

surely congeal'd an strongly cl••••' together that it shall never fal, but it shall stand to eternity; yt neverthelss the substace of earth was bfore Gd laid te foundation of it; for Man may as well say, that a wise Bu ldr may ay the foun••••tin of a stately Tower, with ut any matter or substace, no, not so much as earth for his foundation; theefre Chist saith, a wis Builder buildeth his house upon a Rock: now this Rck ws bfore, he did not make this Rock is foundatio of noting, he Rock was before, he made it a founation to build upon: Likewse, th folish Builer that built upon the sand, tha made the sand his foudation, or laid a foundation of and to build upon: This foolish Biler did not make the sand, the sand was bfr: so it was with God, e laid the founation of the earth in the begin∣ning, but the substance of earth was before he sid te foundation of it, s that th substance and matter of earth was befre God laid the foundtion of earth, if before then eternal: for the Sri∣ptures doth not say, that God laid the founation of ths earth from eternity, but from the beginning, when God created the Heaven and the earth, then God laid the foundatin of the earth as w see: but the sbtac of the arth was before he laid the foundation of it: so that this Scripture maketh nothng to Penns purpose, but altogether o the contrary.
